BETWEEN the BLADE and the Heart
By: Amanda Hocking
SUMMARY: When the fate of the world is at stake Loyalties will be tested Game of Thrones  meets  Blade Runner  in this commanding new YA fantasy inspired by Norse Mythology from  New York Times  bestselling author Amanda Hocking. As one of Odin's Valkyries, Malin's greatest responsibility is to slay immortals and return them to the underworld. But when she unearths a secret that could unravel the balance of all she knows, Malin along with her best friend and her ex-girlfriend must decide where their loyalties lie. And if helping the blue-eyed boy Asher enact his revenge is worth the risk—to the world and her heart.   Chapter 1 Excerpt:
ONE
The air reeked of fermented fish and rotten fruit, thanks to the overflowing dumpster from the restaurant behind us. The polluted alley felt narrow and claustrophobic, sandwiched between skyscrapers.
In the city, it was never quiet or peaceful, even at three in the morning. There were more than thirty million humans and supernatural beings coexisting, living on top of each other. It was the only life I’d ever really known, but the noise of the congestion grated on me tonight.
My eyes were locked on the flickering neon lights of the gambling parlor across the street. The u in Shibuya had gone out, so the sign flashed SHIB YA at me.
The sword sheathed at my side felt heavy, and my body felt restless and electric. I couldn’t keep from fidgeting and cracked my knuckles.
“He’ll be here soon,” my mother, Marlow, assured me. She leaned back against the brick wall beside me, casually eating large jackfruit seeds from a brown paper sack. Always bring a snack on a stakeout was one of her first lessons, but I was far too nervous and excited to eat.
The thick cowl of her frayed black sweater had been pulled up like a hood, covering her cropped blond hair from the icy mist that fell on us. Her tall leather boots only went to her calf, thanks to her long legs. Her style tended to be monochromatic—black on black on black—aside from the shock of dark red lipstick.
My mother was only a few years shy of her fiftieth birthday, with almost thirty years of experience working as a Valkyrie, and she was still as strong and vital as ever. On her hip, her sword Mördare glowed a dull red through its sheath.
The sword of the Valkyries was one that appeared as if it had been broken in half—its blade only a foot long before stopping at a sharp angle. Mördare’s blade was several thousand years old, forged in fires to look like red glass that would glow when the time was nigh.
My sword was called Sigrún, a present on my eighteenth birthday from Marlow. It was a bit shorter than Mördare, with a thicker blade, so it appeared stubby and fat. The handle was black utilitarian, a replacement that my mom had had custom-made from an army supply store, to match her own.
The ancient blade appeared almost black, but as it grew closer to its target, it would glow a vibrant purple. For the past hour that we’d been waiting on our stakeout, Sigrún had been glowing dully on my hip.
The mist grew heavier, soaking my long black hair. I kept the left side of my head shaved, parting my hair over to the right, and my scalp should’ve been freezing from the cold, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t feel anything.
It had begun—the instinct of the Valkyrie, pushing aside my humanity to become a weapon. When the Valkyrie in me took over, I was little more than a scythe for the Grim Reaper of the gods.
“He’s coming,” Marlow said behind me, but I already knew.
The world fell into hyperfocus, and I could see every droplet of rain as it splashed toward the ground. Every sound echoed through me, from the bird flapping its wings a block away, to the club door as it groaned open.
Eleazar Bélanger stumbled out, his heavy feet clomping in the puddles. He was chubby and short, barely over four feet tall, and he would’ve appeared to be an average middle-aged man if it wasn’t for the two knobby horns that stuck out on either side of his forehead. Graying tufts of black hair stuck out from under a bright red cap, and as he walked ahead, he had a noticeable limp favoring his right leg.
He was a Trasgu, a troublemaking goblin, and his appearance belied the strength and cunning that lurked within him. He was over three hundred years old, and today would be the day he died.
I waited in the shadows of the alley for him to cross the street. A coughing fit caused him to double over, and he braced himself against the brick wall.
I approached him quietly—this all went easier when they didn’t have time to prepare. He took off his hat to use it to wipe the snot from his nose, and when he looked up at me, his green eyes flashed with understanding.
“It’s you,” Eleazar said in a weak, craggy voice. We’d never met, and I doubt he’d ever seen me before, but he recognized me, the way they all did when their time was up.
Eleazar Bélanger, you have been chosen to die,” I said, reciting my script, the words automatic and cold on my lips. “It is my duty to return you to the darkness from whence you came.”
“No, wait!” He held up his pudgy hands at me. “I have money. I can pay you. We can work this out.”
“This is not my decision to make,” I said as I pulled the sword from my sheath.
His eyes widened as he realized I couldn’t be bargained with. For a moment I thought he might just accept his fate, but they rarely did. He bowed his head and ran at me like a goat. He was stronger than he looked and caused me to stumble back a step, but he didn’t have anywhere to go.
My mother stood blocking the mouth of the alley, in case I needed her. Eleazar tried to run toward the other end, but his leg slowed him, and I easily overtook him. Using the handle of my sword, I cracked him on the back of the skull, and he fell to the ground on his knees.
Sigrún glowed brightly, with light shining out from it and causing the air to glow purple around us. Eleazar mumbled a prayer to the Vanir gods. I held the sword with both hands, and I struck it across his neck, decapitating him.
And then, finally, the electricity that had filled my body, making my muscles quiver and my bones ache, left me, and I breathed in deeply. The corpse of an immortal goblin lay in a puddle at my feet, and I felt nothing but relief.
“It was a good return,” my mother said, and put her hand on my shoulder. “You did well, Malin.”

My Review:
Driving into this distinctive and complicated world that pulls you in almost instantly. With the gripping twists and turns it kept me compelled to the very end, as I could not put it down. These characters are believeable even with the characteristic of each character she protrays in their environment. The author Amanda Hocking depicts the Norse mythology and folklore in a way that paints a picture of astonishing characters across each page of her story. Her storyline is set in a gloomy, rutting and deadly world where mortals and immortals live together, in a shatterable society that can only be balanced with the enforcement of the Valkyries. When a dark secert is uncovered that has been hidden is revealed, it may upset the order of balance pushing a world into chaos. I can’t wait to read more from this author. If you love this book as much as I did, I highly recommand reading the second book in the series FROM the EARTH to the SHADOWS........
I highly recommand this book. I give it 4 out of 5 stars......

(Book #1 in the Configured Trilogy)
         Genres: Sci-Fi/Dystopian, Young Adult

MY THOUGHS:

The author Jennetta Penner writes a convincing story that you want to just dive into. Her world is set into the near distance future, where things don't seem as they should be. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. " One more page, just one more". The characteristics of the characters just jump off page at you as their story is told. The story reads quickly with its twists, turns and many, many surprises. With the many dystopian depicted worlds written today, I feel that Jennetta Penner's story throws down the gauntlet with the best of them.

I highly recommend this dystopian trilogy. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
jenetta-18dcropedsquare2small400    Author Bio: I'm Jenetta and a lifetime lover of Sci-Fi (thx Dad). I had a weird LONG stint (declaring HOW long would give away too many age secrets... and eh hem... a girl never tells) where I read almost no books for pleasure (the horror!). Near the end of 2014 I picked up Hunger Games, and I was off like a rocket. That next year I read about 40 YA books (mostly Sci-Fi/dystopian) and a couple months into it got the idea to write a book (with no prior experience or even desire) about children who were not allowed to be raised by their biological parents. You see, I am an adoptive mama of two lovely daughters from foster care. That story grew into what Configured is today. It has been a HUGE journey with a lot of ups and downs and it took WAY longer than I anticipated. But it is finally here.

To plunge ourselves into something old made new again!

We dive into the old world of comics, and renew it with such vibrants colors in these graphic novels. It will open the world to some of your favorite novels and bring them to life on these masterly drawn pages. For some it makes reading a book easier to have pictures before them.

🐲 PUT A TOE INTO THE WATER OF ONE OF THESE OUT OF THIS WORLD NOVELS 🐉

                                               NIMONA BY NOELLE STEVENSON

SYNOPSES:

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel has been hailed by critics and fans alike as the arrival of a “superstar” talent (NPR.org).

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

MY THOUGHTS:

The author does an excellent way of telling the story in graphic novel form. Noelle Stevenson is both author and illustrator, she demonstrates humor, over coming unfortunate events in ones life. To try and find way to survive, to fit in with everyone around you. That is hard enough without being a shapeshifter at the same time. Is the hero bad and the villain good? Or are they a little of both. You must submerge yourself into the adventurous story that touches on hardships and trying to over come them, gay love. I find this graphic novel very entertaining to read. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good story. If you enjoy Noelle Stevenson's work in this book 📚. I highly recommend you run out and pick up her other series Lumberjanes vol. 1 & 2.

I highly recommend this graphic novel, I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4 out of 5 stars.

Let's spring board off and dive into another fabulous book!

📘 A Fantastic Book On An Adventure Through An Unknown World 📕

So come along with me and unlock 🗝 the door 🚪 into the wonderful world this
author has created!!  When we open the door 🚪 as we step through into a magical fantasy of
the elven city of Elvorium. Follow me through this spectacular book and come treasure troving with me!

KINGS OR PAWNS ( STEPS OF POWER: THE KINGS BOOK 1) BY J. J. SHERWOOD

SYNOPSES:

The elven city of Elvorium has become corrupted to the core by politics. With his father dead and The Royal Schismatic his back, Prince Hairem becomes the king of the elven world on Sevrigel. Young and daring, Hairem is determined to undo the council's power, but quickly finds his loyal council members brutally murdered by an assassin loosed within the city.

As corruption and death threaten to tear the city apart from within, the warlord Seabellus threatens the city from without, laying siege to Sevrigel's eastern capital. With the eleven world crumbling around him, Hairem finds himself in a dangerous political balance between peace and all out war.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is J.J. Sherwood's first novel, along with that she has done a marvelous job at the world building and characterization of the characters. I had the pleasure to be a part of her blog tour and also took part in reviewing this amazing world in this book. If you love the dynamics of the Lord of the Rings you will love Kings or Pawns with the different classifications of the elvens. The story plunges you into the political ring with the division of elves and other clans of species.

The author J.J. Sherwood pulled together these characters out of her hat and poured them on to the page with such ease. That we can picture them within our minds eye, as we get to know these diverse characters quite well within their Elvorium setting. We see this world unfold around us like a piece of paper that we have folded into a million folds.

Kings or Pawns story is hard to figure out at first who plays those roles, as for the King himself he's a pawn in the political setting of the Elvorium council. What the king Hairem must do to balance his world with the council. As we progress in this amazing adventure into an unseen world that emerges before us, it slowly builds up to many events that you may not see coming. What? "Bam," did that just happened? Wow yes, yes it did! I kept wanting to turn the page again and again. Always wanting to know what happens next, never to be disappointed in the end. I was completely shocked in the end because the author J.J. Sherwood crafted the story so well that it kept me guessing till the very end. I can not wait to continue this series unto the next book Heroes or Thieves ( Steps of Power: The King  Book 2).

I highly recommend this book series and give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5 stars!!

Where will my travels take me but along the way to a incredible book by an awesome author. How could not pass by a book by this author but then again I could not pass up any book!!!

ANGELS & DEMONS : A NOVEL ( ROBERT LANGDON ) BY DAN BROWN

SYNOPSIS:

When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to his first assignment to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol - seared into the chest of a murdered physicist - he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.   Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival. Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation. Find out what happens in this thriller adventure.

MY THOUGHTS:

I thought it was well written with all its twists and turns. It kept you guessing until the very end. How deep into the Vatican will Robert Langdon have to go? We find out the many secrets of the church and the length they go to hide them. Are we angles and do good in the world or demons always doing bad things. We are both, just like the priest character in this book. When he does not get what he wants he goes about to destroy that very thing he has grown to love. Why do we always seem to go down that damaging road of distortion. I liked the influential aspect of the priest in his struggle with the church and the way the clues are exposed to Robert Langdon's character. How we ride along bit by bit to unearth the real killer with in the story. Love the ancient aspects that pull you in and won't let you go until the end. Yes I quite enjoyed this book and cannot wait to move ahead with the series to find out what happens next for Robert Langdon.

I give this mystery thriller 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

See the amazing books I come across along the way!

Come along for the ride to see where my journey takes me! Hey, look over there! Do I see an amazing book on the eve of discovery! Why yes I do. So here we go!
The Devil's Queen : A Novel of Catherine de Medici by Jeanne Kalogridis
In this book, Catherine de Medici is born into one of the most powerful family of Florence and seems to have everything a young girl could want but soon a violent conflict erupts in the country. She then find herself in the hands of her enemies only to end up in prison.  Later Catherine is forced to marry the handsome Prince Henry of France but is soon overshadowed by his mistress the much older and conniving Diana de Poitier. Having a hard time conceiving children Catherine decided to turn to the dark arts of sorcery,  when she teams up with astrologer Cosimo Ruggieri. She then must deal with the consequences of her actions by paying the price of what she had done.  With Catherine's blood-soaked visions for the future, Kalogridis reveals great love and desire Catherine bore for her husband Henry and the shear determination to keep her sons on the throne of France.

I found this book a joy to read. Going a long for the ride as the author Jeanne Kalogridis brings Catherine de Medici a live through the pages of history again. It shows the hardships Catherine had to go through as a young girl growing up into adulthood. I loved driving into the French court and knowing the ins and outs of what Catherine had to do to achieve to become one of the most famous monarchs in France. I feel that the author did a fabulous job creating these characters, and the quality of each person who lived during those times. She developed the story line as it made you feel like you were stepping back in time and immersing yourself into the French country side. I think the last chapter could of been a little longer but the author has a section at the end to wrap up Catherine de Medici's time line until her death. If you want a glimpse into French history in the 16th century and love a good historical novel this book might be for you.

I gave this historical fiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 out of 5 stars. Loved it.
